The Line Wrapped Around the Building. We Were Not Ready.

Four-panel illustration of a recruiting conference challenge, a student email, a regional strategy pivot, and the result

My executive came back from his first conference with one of the most respected student-led engineering organizations in the country with two things. Genuine amazement at the talent in the room, and real frustration that we were not capturing it.

What he saw was an organization run entirely by students with the operational discipline of a major corporation, and a line of engineering candidates wrapped around the building, with students waiting up to two hours just to get registered in our database.

We had a mega sponsorship package, one workshop, a minimal hospitality suite, and we were six months outside of our recruiting window. The talent was there. Our infrastructure to convert it was not.

A college hire wrote directly to my executive and our CEO to name the gap. That email triggered an organizational response, and my executive appointed me as his proxy to lead the transformation of our entire engagement model with the organization.

I did not take that mandate lightly for a single day.

The strategic pivot was timing. Showing up only at the national conference meant we were perpetually late to the talent we needed most. So I built a cross-functional team, partnered with university recruiting, and drove a regional conference strategy that put us in front of concentrated engineering talent before our competitors arrived.

We showed up as the largest company in attendance, assessed over 40 candidates, drove 22 fly-in interviews, and converted 12 offers from a single event.

Being in the room where potential gets recognized, where you can see what someone is capable of before the rest of the world catches up, confirmed something I already knew.

I am a connector and a builder of pipelines, and my operations instincts translate directly into talent strategy.

What is the most underutilized recruiting strategy companies overlook when building diverse engineering pipelines?
